How to Edit Word Documents Without Microsoft Word
Microsoft 365 costs $7–10/month for personal use, much more for business. Google Docs is free but uploads your documents to Google. For occasional .docx edits — fixing a typo in a contract, updating a CV — neither is ideal. PDFPuddle's in-browser Word editor handles these cases without subscription or upload.
When in-browser editing makes sense
Quick fixes on a device without Office. Editing on a Chromebook or shared public computer. Privacy-sensitive edits where uploading to Google or Microsoft isn't acceptable. Reviewing and lightly editing files received from clients without committing to their format.
How PDFPuddle's editor works
Open Edit Word, upload your .docx, and a full editor loads in your browser. Make your changes, then export the updated .docx. The file stays on your device throughout — there's no upload, no cloud sync.
Format compatibility
PDFPuddle reads and writes standard .docx (Office Open XML). Most documents created in Word 2007+ work correctly. Very old .doc files may need to be converted to .docx first using Word, LibreOffice, or an online converter. Documents with macros, embedded objects, or complex Word-specific features may not render perfectly.
Limitations
For complex documents with custom styles, embedded charts, or pixel-perfect formatting requirements, Microsoft Word remains the gold standard. PDFPuddle covers the 80% of cases that don't need that level of fidelity.
