How to Convert PDF to Word for Editing

PDFs are perfect for sharing documents that should look identical to every recipient. They're terrible for editing. When you need to update a contract clause, reuse content from a report, or make changes someone sent you, converting to a Word-compatible format first is the fastest path.

What 'PDF to Word' actually means

Strict .docx conversion preserves headings, tables, fonts, and images. Text-layer extraction pulls the readable text content out of the PDF as plain text. PDFPuddle uses the second approach — fast, accurate for text content, less suited to complex multi-column layouts. Open the .txt output in Word or Google Docs and you can apply your own formatting.

How to convert

Open PDF to Word, drop in your PDF, click Convert to Text. PDFPuddle uses PDF.js to walk the PDF's text layer page by page, output a clean .txt file with page separators, and download it instantly.

When this works well

Reports, articles, contracts, and any text-heavy PDF with a proper text layer (most modern PDFs). Conversion is near-instant, even for 100+ page documents.

When you need OCR first

Scanned PDFs and image-only PDFs have no text layer — they're just pictures of text. PDFPuddle's OCR PDF tool extracts the embedded text layer when available; for pure-image scans, run them through a dedicated OCR engine first.
